Pre-Elections Conference for Joint Committee

Pre-elections Conference for the Joint Committee of Religious Leaders for Peace and Tranquility, 15th-17th October 2015, Unguja

 

Pre-elections Conference for the Joint Committee of Religious Leaders for Peace and Tranquility took place on 15th October in Unguja. All the 14 political parties were represented in the conference, with a total of 60 participants. Grand Mufti Kabi, Bishop Hafidh and Vice Chair of the JC and Chair of the conference Sheik Ismael opened the conference with insightful speeches calling for peace and tolerance. The PROPEL representatives, the Elections Conflict Management Advisor Victoria Florinder, the Leadership and Conflict Management trainer and CSO Expert Rindai Chipfunde-Vava, and local partner Mohammed Hafidh from the Global Network of Religions for Children, jointly presented international, regional and local view on peace processes and dialogue as an effective conflict management measure.

 

The conference will continue on 17th October in Pemba, with the aim of integrating also the religious leaders and politicians in Pemba. As a result of the conferences, the Joint Committee will issue a joint statement on the key messages that have been jointly developed and agreed on among all participating entities. The conference is financially supported by PROPEL and coordinated by the PROPEL project associate Zanzibar Interfaith Centre. PROPEL pledged to support the Joint Committee also in a post-election conference.
